Each Primary school receives Primary PE and Sports funding by the government to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport on offer in school.
The national vision for the Primary PE and Sport Premium is to ensure
‘ALL pupils leaving primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport’
To achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools. It is important to emphasise that the focus of spending must lead to long lasting impact against the vision (above) that will live on well beyond the Primary PE and Sport Premium funding.
It is expected that schools will see an improvement against the following 5 key indicators:
1.The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles
2.The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
3.Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
4.Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
5.Increased participation in competitive sport
At St. Therese of Lisieux, there are many ways in which we utilise such funding to support our commitment promoting PE and sport across the curriculum.
At St Therese, we are using the funding to work with Stockton Schools Sports Partnership, to give our young people the best opportunities in Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity. As a school we have bought the Gold package.
The partnership will work with our pupils with a focus on providing opportunities to engage and compete in a wide range of sport festivals or physical activity throughout the academic year. As part of the partnership, we also receive access to staff and subject leader personal development training, entry into inter schools competition and opportunities to work alongside coaches to develop effective planning and improve outcomes for children.
We have been represented at many festivals and tournaments throughout the year such as swimming, cricket, tri-golf, dodge-ball, cross country, indoor athletics and football including the Wilf Mannion Cup and the Catholic Cup.
St Therese employs a specialist sports coach to deliver training for staff and provide CPD for staff. In addition our sports coach provides a range of lunchtime and before and after school sports clubs thus providing pupils access to a range of sporting activities.
Every Friday evening and during lunch times we host free training sessions for our school football team (girls and boys). Our FA trained sports coach delivers the sessions, develop skills and arrange competitive matches against other local primary schools.
In addition to supporting the delivery of the PE curriculum; our sports coach delivers weekly stamina and fitness training for all KS2 pupils. We have also identified pupils who require further support with physical development and co-ordination and our sports coach delivers targeted physical intervention programmes for such pupils.
We have funded CPD programmes to support the physical development of pupils in the Early Years and our Sports Coach is currently working towards a Level 5 PE qualification.
Funding has also supported leadership opportunities for our pupils; twelve pupils were trained as School Sport leaders and we have an active Sports Council with sports councillors in every class.
We have annual Health and Well- being week in school the focus is on improving healthy lifestyles and well-being. Children try new things, undertake outdoor and adventurous activities and this year the focus was on Healthy minds and developing a growth mindset and relaxation techniques.
We also use funding to ensure resources are of the highest quality and equipment is replenished; for example this year we have purchased new mats in school and invested in a new sports kit for school teams.
